Powers Street as a Bikeway

North Winnipeg C.C. member Kevin Bailey created this record of the proposed Powers Street Bikeway (north from Pritchard Avenue to Kingsbury Avenue), with photo highlights of destinations and points of interest along the way.

Low in automobile traffic, yet passing by many vibrant parks, schools and recreation areas, the Powers Bikeway makes tremendously efficient use of existing infrastructure. Powers is an excellent north/south route through the area, though some of the two-way stops could be revised to improve safety and many four-way stops might be amended to expedite the flow of bicycle traffic. A trip along Powers from Pritchard Avenue to Kingsbury Avenue reveals the following:

Turning north onto Powers from Pritchard we enter a school zone.

We cross Manitoba Avenue approaching William Whyte School at 200 Powers Street.

Crossing Burrows Avenue we have a two-way stop, though there is a boulevard in the centre of Burrows.

Looking south across Burrows Avenue we can see pedestrian crossing signs. Hope Centre Health Care is just behind us at 240 Powers Street.

We cross Redwood Avenue at a two-way stop sign.

Mountain Avenue brings another two-way stop for us.

When we reach Anderson Avenue, we are at the beginning of Machray Park which stretches for an entire block to Church Avenue.

We cross Church Avenue at a four-way stop and can see St. John’s High School on our right.

At Cathedral Avenue, we encounter another four-way stop.

Bannerman Avenue brings a two-way stop for those travelling along Powers Street. There is also a local convenience store on the southeast corner.

A two-way stop sign greets us as we approach Atlantic Avenue.

Polson Avenue brings yet another two-way stop for us.

Much like the intersection at Burrows Avenue, Inkster Avenue is divided by a boulevard. We cross at a two-way stop.

We pass Clara Hughes Park on our left as we approach the four-way stop at Matheson Avenue. Faith Academy and Faith Baptist Church are just across Matheson. There is a four-way stop at Smithfield Avenue.

At Enniskillen Avenue, we cross at another four-way stop.

We enter another school zone then cross Jefferson Avenue at a four-way stop.

The West Kildonan Library can be seen on the northwest corner and the Nev Elwick Memorial Recreation Centre is just ahead.

Looking back to the southeast after crossing Perth Avenue, you can see the Nev Elwick Memorial Recreation Centre.

Crossing Hartford Avenue is the last stop on the way to Kingsbury Avenue. It is another two-way stop.
