Kingsbury Avenue as a Bikeway
North Winnipeg C.C. member Kevin Bailey created this record of the proposed Kingsbury Avenue Bikeway (west from Main Street to McPhillips Street), with photo highlights of destinations and points of interest along the way.Providing an east/west link from Main Street to McPhillips Street, Kingsbury Avenue would utilize existing infrastructure to create a bikeway with minimal expenditure.
Travelling Kingsbury gives one the sense of travelling down a rather wide back lane with a better-than-average road surface. Few houses face Kingsbury and automobile traffic is quite limited, making it a near-perfect candidate for a bikeway’s 30 km/h speed limit. Travelling Kingsbury from Main Street to McPhillips Street, you will encounter the following:

West Kildonan Collegiate is located at Main Street and Kingsbury Avenue. There is a pedestrian corridor on Main Street across from the school’s front entrance.

Just past the west side of the school grounds, we cross Aikens Street and immediately find Helen Promislow Park.

The intersection at Salter Street has a two-way stop for us.

At the Powers Street intersection we encounter another two-way stop.

There is yet another small park as we approach the two-way stop at Andrews Street.

We pause for another two-way stop at McGregor Street Before passing the railway tracks, we encounter a four-way stop at McKenzie Street.

There is a four-way stop at Sinclair Street. Ten Ten Sinclair Housing is on the northwest corner and Garden City Community Club/Seven Oaks Soccer Plex is just ahead.

The grounds of Garden City Community Centre at 725 Kingsbury Avenue stretch north past Verbena Street.

At Verbena Street, we are greeted by a three-way stop.

At McPhillips Street, we encounter the only set of traffic lights on our trip. Looking back across McPhillips Street to the section of Kingsbury Avenue we came from, we find eastbound traffic is prevented from entering Kingsbury Avenue. This keeps shopping centre traffic to a minimum in this residential area. Looking south on McPhillips Street, we see that traffic Is prevented from turning east onto Kingsbury Avenue by a no-left-turn sign.
