EXISTING ROUTES

There are many more active transportation routes, signed bike routes, recreational trails and diamond lanes than those shown on the One Green City map. However, for the purposes of clarity, the One Green City (OGC) map shows only those sections of route suitable for creating a comprehensive base network. For example, meandering trail sections and traffic-heavy "signed bicycle routes" are not shown.

If possible, routes susceptible to flooding have been avoided or an alternative is provided. A few routes indicated on the map have bridges that flood (such as Sturgeon Creek, Omand's Creek and the path North of Fermor), but since the areas they serve offer little alternative, they have been included with suggestions that those bridges be reworked.

One Green City is an attempt to start from scratch - an attempt to make sure that every proscribed AT route provides tanglible safety benefits and increased convenience for all users, year round. However, as per the project's goals, in order to build the network quickly, existing infrastructure will be used as much as possible.

For more info on route design logic, please see the One Green City report (under Cycling Advocacy - see W.T.A. for current recreational trail info; the M.C.A's recreation and transportation committee helped produce the Cyclists's Map of Winnipeg. Unfortunately, Winnipeg currently has little in terms of a cycling route network. However, to plan the safest route now, their map is the best resource and is available at most bicycle shops in the city).
