Dufferin Avenue as a Bikeway

North Winnipeg C.C. member Kevin Bailey created this record of the proposed Dufferin Avenue Bikeway (north from Powers Street to Main Street), with photo highlights of destinations and points of interest along the way.

With its relatively wide lanes and lower-than-average traffic volume, Dufferin Avenue has the makings of a safe and cost-efficient bikeway. It serves as a connector between the proposed Powers Street Bikeway and Main Street, allowing cyclists to navigate around the CP rail yards without travelling over the daunting Slaw Rebchuk Bridge.

While commuting Dufferin Avenue from Powers Street to Main Street, we observe the following:

Turning from Powers Street onto Dufferin Avenue, we immediately enter a school zone.

The intersection at Salter Street is controlled by traffic lights. The high curb design entering the yield is certainly not cyclist-friendly. R. B. Russell School is just east of the intersection.

Still at the southwest corner of the intersection, we can clearly see a path worn through the grass by cyclists trying to avoid the claustrophobic yield lane.

There is a four-way stop at Robinson Street. The Indian and Métis Friendship Centre is on the southeast corner.

King Street brings another four-way stop. There is a residential housing complex on the northwest corner. Turtle Island and David Livingstone School are located one block north.

We’re now at Main Street and can travel through the Higgins underpass just a short way to the south.
